A SECOND giant will roam the streets of Liverpool in the city’s Sea Odyssey extravaganza in April.

The 50ft-tall marionette is the uncle of the already announced little girl giant taking part in Liverpool’s largest ever outdoor event.

Created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic, the three-day piece of street theatre will take place over the weekend of April 20-22.

Organisers Culture Liverpool have launched a volunteer programme - the biggest since 2008 - encouraging local people to get involved in Sea Odyssey.

Wendy Simon, Liverpool city council’s cabinet member for culture and tourism, said: “To have two giants exploring the city, discovering some of our most-loved landmarks, will be a fantastic sight and it gives a new dimension to the whole Sea Odyssey experience.

“I’m delighted we can give people the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of the event.  It will be incredible to see the show, but to play a role at the heart of the action – whether it’s operating the giants or welcoming visitors to North Liverpool – is something that will stay with people forever.”

Around 250,000 people are expected to attend Sea Odyssey, which opens in North Liverpool before moving to the city centre.

Devised by world-leading French street theatre company Royal De Luxe, Sea Odyssey tells the story of how the human spirit triumphs over the Titanic tragedy.

The more than 200 volunteer positions are open to anyone over the age of 18.

They include giant operators; the Benevol team, which forms the cordon helping the giants move through the crowds; technical and operational staff including special effects assistants, sound engineers, drivers, welders and production assistants; and general volunteers who will welcome visitors and provide information about the event.

Some of the roles require specific skills and abilities, and most will be physically demanding, so the team are on the look out for people with a good level of stamina.

Online applications, found at www.giantspectacular.com, and must be submitted by 5pm on February 21.

Sixty minute presentations on the volunteer opportunities will take place in the Small Concert Room at St George’s Hall on Thursday February 16 at 10am, 2pm and 5.30pm.

Successful applicants will be invited to take part in informal interviews in March.
