ST HELENS is set to be served by a new fleet of hi-tech buses.
Arriva has bought 16 new environmentally-friendly Optare Solo buses at a cost of £1.6m.
The new buses, which will operate across the town’s services and neighbouring areas, are all fitted with low floors for easy access and the latest engine technology, making them more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly.
Howard Farrall, area managing director for Arriva Merseyside, said: “We are delighted to unveil the buses, which represent a significant investment in the services we provide in and around St Helens.
“The introduction of these new vehicles means that all of our buses in St Helens now have low floor access, making it easier and more comfortable for passengers to travel with us, and an improved journey experience overall.” Arriva will also be introducing a series of greener buses next year.
A new low-carbon fleet of 33 new Volvo hybrid buses will come into service on the popular Cross River Services – 407, 432, 433, 437, 464 and 472 operating between Liverpool and Wirral.
The promised investment follows a successful bid to the government’s Green Bus Fund, and will see Arriva add £26.7m of low-carbon buses to its UK-wide fleet next year.
