LIVERPOOL comedian Freddie Starr has returned for further questioning by police after his initial arrest last night.

Starr is being interviewed on suspicion of sexual offences and falls under the strand of the investigation classed as "Savile and others".

The 69-year-old has strongly denied accusations linked to the abuse claims. Last month he branded Savile "despicable" and "disgusting", and urged police to interview him so he could clear his name.

His arrest follows that of Gary Glitter on Sunday by officers working on Operation Yewtree.

Former pop star Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was questioned at a central London police station after being detained at his home in the capital.

Savile, who died last year at the age of 84, is now believed to have been one of the UK’s most prolific abusers, with about 300 possible victims.

Scotland Yard is leading a national investigation into the television and radio star’s activities.

LIVERPOOL comedian Freddie Starr has been bailed after he was arrested by detectives investigating allegations of sexual abuse surrounding Jimmy Savile.

Officers from Metropolitan Police arrested the TV personality in Warwickshire at 5.45pm yesterday as part of Operation Yewtree.

Starr, 69, was publicly implicated following allegations made about Savile in the past month but has denied the accusations.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Officers working on Operation Yewtree have arrested a man in his 60s in connection with the investigation.

"The man was arrested on suspicion of sexual offences and has been taken into police custody locally."

The spokesman said the arrest falls under the strand of the investigation termed "Savile and others".

Freddie Starr, real name Frederick Fowell, previously applied to the High Court for an injunction to prevent publication of a "libellous allegation".

Starr was born in Huyton in 1943 and in the early 1960s, was the lead singer of the Merseybeat pop group The Midnighters.

The group was promoted by the Beatles manager Brian Epstein, with Starr performing stints in nightclubs in Hamburg.

Starr appeared on television talent show Opportunity Knocks as part of a comedy beat act, Freddie Starr and The Delmonts.

In 1970, he got his first big break when he was invited to appear at the Royal Variety Performance.

In the late 1990s, the keen Everton supporter headed up The Freddie Starr Show and has made appearances on a variety of programmes including Celebrity Fit Club, Celebrity Wife Swap, Living with the Dead. Last December, he pulled out of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here for health reasons.

His arrest follows that of Gary Glitter on Sunday by officers working on Operation Yewtree.

The former pop star was questioned at a central London police station after being detained at his home in the capital.
