LIVERPOOL is one of Europe’s top 10 fastest-growing tourist destinations.
The destinations-on-the-rise list, compiled by the TripAdvisor website, was based on reviews and opinions from travellers worldwide.
Topping the European list was Kiev, in Ukraine, followed by Moscow, Turin and the Russian city of St Petersburg.
Of the four UK cities included, Liverpool was in 10th place after Glasgow (6th), Manchester (7th), and Belfast (8th).
The news was welcomed by Liverpool’s tourism chiefs. Duncan Frazer, commercial and marketing director of the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “We are pleased that Trip Advisor travellers recognise Liverpool as a key tourist destination and one to watch.
“Tourism is a key growth sector with the visitor economy generating visitor spend of £3.1bn a year and supporting over 43,000 jobs.
“Liverpool is also ranked in the top five UK destinations for overseas visitors, according to data from the International Passenger Survey and we look forward to seeing the market strengthen in the future.”
The city council’s cabinet member for culture and tourism, Cllr Wendy Simon, added: “It’s fantastic news that we’re one of the top ten must-visit locations in Europe. This city has so much to offer when it comes to its history and rich cultural heritage that visitors are spoilt for choice when they spend time here. Whether you’re passionate about architecture, music, sport or shopping this city is an unmissable destination.
“There has been a huge amount of investment in recent years focused on improving our tourism offer. This includes the cruise liner terminal which allows passengers to start and finish their holidays here, top names from across the world now perform at the arena and Liverpool One is shopping heaven for millions every year. ”
TripAdvisor spokeswoman Emma Shaw said: “All winners should be incredibly proud of their award. Not only has traveller interest in their destination increased, but each city has also seen a significant rise in positive feedback on their hotels, restaurants and things to do.”
