AN historic Merseyside school has announced plans to become a government-backed free school.
Independent Streatham House School in Blundellsands, which celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2010 aims to complete its change by September 2013. Its decision to become a centrally funded school is being driven by a desire to end fee-paying and open up to more children.
The school for pupils aged four to 16, has enjoyed a revival in fortunes under former councillor Debi Jones and headteacher Debby Rigby and is now centre of excellence in the arts and musical theatre.
The school will be renamed Streatham Arts School if the free school plans are implemented and will continue a commitment to small class sizes.
