THE Archbishop of Liverpool, the Most Reverend Patrick Kelly, was admitted to hospital this morning after suffering a slight stroke.

The 74-year-old’s condition is described as comfortable and he is expected to remain in hospital for several days.

A spokesman for the Catholic Archdiocese said it was not known at this stage if the Most Rev Patrick Kelly would be well enough to officiate at this year’s Christmas events at the Metropolitan cathedral, including Midnight Mass.

In the meantime, auxiliary bishop Tom Williams will stand in for the Archbishop, along with retired auxiliary bishop Vincent Malone.

Archbishop Kelly celebrated his golden jubilee after 50 years as a priest earlier this year with a special mass at the Cathedral.
