DOZENS of families will travel to London tomorrow for a historic court hearing which is set to quash the discredited Hillsborough inquest verdicts.
The court is also looking into a request from Hillsborough Justice Campaign lawyer Elkan Abrahamson to screen the hearing in Liverpool via a video link.
The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Igor Judge, and two other justices sitting at London’s Royal Courts of Justice will hear the application to overturn the accidental death verdicts returned in the wake of the 1989 disaster.
The application, made by the Attorney General, Dominic Grieve, QC, is not expected to be opposed and the prospect of an adjournment is thought to be unlikely.
Hillsborough disaster families are still unclear about when fresh inquests would be heard, although the judges could set out a basic timetable.
Barrister Pete Wetherby, QC, will be allowed to make an application on behalf of Anne Williams, who lost her son, Kevin.
Anne said: “All being well, I'll be travelling down with Charlotte Hennessy – who lost her father, James, at Hillsborough – my brother, and also Stevie Hart and Ian Barnes who've given me such great support for so long.
"I've waited 23 years to see these accidental death verdicts struck down – hopefully this is the first real step towards getting the justice we've been fighting for all this time.
"The last time we came out of the High Court after losing the Judicial Review in 1993, we were all in tears after being stitched up. Let's hope we'll have big smiles on Wednesday."
