Museum of Liverpool wins Council of Europe 2013 prize

THE Museum of Liverpool has been named the European Museum of the Year for 2013.

The Council of Europe in Paris awarded the museum – opened in July 2011 – the 2013 prize ahead of a three-strong shortlist. The museum will be presented with a bronze statue for the year.

Joe Benton, Labour MP for Bootle, who was at the Paris session, said: “This is a highly prestigious award which shows that capital of culture was not a one-off.”

Riverside MP Louise Ellman said: “This is a wonderful achievement for Liverpool. It builds on our success in being crowned European Capital of Culture in 2008. Congratulations to Phil Redmond and the team at the museum.”

A spokesman for National Museums Liverpool said: “We are absolutely thrilled with this award which is not just an accolade for the Museum of Liverpool but for the city as well.”

A Council of Europe spokesman said: “The museum has an outstanding capacity to get people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities involved”.
