ONE of the few remaining family-run newsagent’s in Liverpool is to close after the owners retire early in the new year.
Maureen (Mo) and Pete Gerrard have been running the Aigburth Road shop since 1979, although it is believed the site has been used as a newsagent’s for around 60 years in total.
But now Mo, 63, and Pete, 65, have decided they have had their fill of getting up at dawn and working long hours and are taking their well-earned retirement.
Although they tried to sell Gerrard’s News as a going concern no buyer came forward.
It is believed the property will now revert to a rented unit with a flat above once the business closes for the last time on January 26.
Mo said: "It’s very long hours running a newsagent’s. We’re the last ones in the area that still do newspaper deliveries.
"We’ve seen the other shops on the road close and open as something else. There used to be a good variety of shops, including a bakery and dairy, now it’s dominated by rented units, fast food outlets and hairdressers.
"Even Aigburth Road itself has changed – it used to be all one road, now it’s split in two by a central reservation running down the middle."
