Young Merseyside lawyer killed delivering Christmas presents to friend's baby

A YOUNG Merseyside man killed when his car skidded into the path of a lorry was today remembered as a "true soul who was there for everyone".

Recently-qualified barrister Alfred "Alfie" Sergeant had filled his car with Christmas presents before driving to Shropshire to visit a friend and their newborn baby when tragedy struck.

The 24-year-old, from Bootle, lost control on a bend near the Shropshire town of Much Wenlock and collided with the articulated lorry last Saturday.

His devastated sister Cheryl today paid an emotional tribute to Alfie, describing him as "my rock".

Ms Sergeant, 32, said: "Alfie was my world. We would always help each other, when I was low he was there for me. He was my world.

"He was always happy. He had such a true soul because he was there for everyone.

"He had hundreds of friends, everyone spoke highly of him. He couldn’t do enough for people.

"When the accident happened he was going to see a friend who was living in Shrewsbury. He had presents with him to give to their newborn baby.

"That’s the kind of person he was."

Alfie, a former pupil of Bootle’s St George of England high school, was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of paramedics and an off-duty GP who stopped at the scene. The A458 road was closed for seven hours following the crash. Tragically, dad Alfred identified his son’s body on Christmas Eve.

Ms Sergeant said the cause of the crash was still a mystery.
