Busy New Year’s Eve for North West Ambulance Service

AMBULANCE staff took one emergency call every 10 seconds on New Year’s Eve – making it one of the busiest nights of the year.

The North West Ambulance Service received 2,265 calls from midnight and into the early hours of New Year’s Day yesterday.

In the first seven hours of 2013, the service responded to 546 category A 999 calls for serious and immediately life-threatening incidents.

The figure matched that of the same period last year.

Crews across the region responded to call-outs including at least 17 serious assaults, numerous road traffic collisions and two incidents involving firework injuries.

But ambulance bosses said they were disappointed that despite pleas to the public to use the service wisely they still received inappropriate calls.

These included a 999 call requesting a paramedic response to take a dog’s temperature.
