THREE Blockbuster stores in Merseyside are to close after the company went into administration.
A spokesman for business advisory firm Deloitte, the administrators for the DVD and video games rental chain, told the Post stores in Liverpool’s Edge Lane, Moss Lane in Walton and Westway in Maghull were among the 129 set to close.
The stores will shut over the coming weeks as part of a “phased closure” and are in addition to 31 shops which had already been put on notice to close.
Announcements of further closures could be made in the next few weeks as the administrators review the profitability of the shops.
Joint administrator Lee Manning said: “Having reviewed the portfolio with management, the store closure plan is an inevitable consequence of having to restructure the company to a profitable core which is capable of being sold.
“We would like to thank the company’s employees for their support and professionalism during this difficult time.
“We are also grateful to the customers for their continued support.”
Staff in the stores affected are facing redundancy.
The Deloitte spokesman said closures were not taking place with immediate effect.
A dedicated employee helpline has been put in place and the company is running an Employee Assistance Programme to help those staff facing redundancy find other jobs.
Customers will be notified in advance of closures so they can return outstanding rental items but stores will remain open for business as usual until then.
A number of closing down promotions are expected to be offered in the run up to the closures.
