Pilkington to shut Aintree glass site with loss of 51 jobs

GLASS giant Pilkington is to close its factory site in Aintree next month, with the loss of 51 jobs.

The roof-glazing factory will shut the Aintree Racecourse business park site next month, leaving its employees – some of whom have been there 13 years – with only weeks to find new jobs.

Nippon Sheet Glass group, who own St Helens-based Pilkington, will also close a Basingstoke site this February, with the loss of another 41 workers.

The group employs some 1,600 people across its local sites in St Helens and Ormskirk.

A spokesperson said: "Following a review of the IGU Processing business within the UK, the NSG Group has announced its intention to close the Pilkington Basingstoke IGU and Pilkington Aintree sites.

"Where possible, remaining production will be transferred to alternative sites within the UK. We anticipate manufacturing to cease during February and closures to be completed by spring, 2013.

"Discussions have commenced today with all employees and representatives at both sites to look at all possible steps to mitigate the effect of these redundancies. Every effort will be made to look for employment opportunities elsewhere."
