ARMED robbers stabbed a security guard filling up a cash machine at a Liverpool university halls of residence.

Four masked men, one said to be armed with a machete, struck at Carnatic Hall in Mossley Hill just before midday yesterday.

The horror unfurled in front of dozens of stunned students, many waiting at a bus stop just yards away.

Police said that the security guard suffered minor injuries and was left shaken.

A blue Ford Fiesta, said to be the getaway car, was found burnt out shortly after in nearby Drewell Road.

One witness described how the robbers chased after students who had bravely tried to intervene.

She said: “There was a whole load of students waiting for the bus.

“Four guys with machetes and wearing balaclavas ran up to the guard, stabbed him in the arm and ran through the campus.

“They were chasing students as they fled to the getaway car.”

The raiders were said to have dropped a cash box as they made their escape.

Orla Sanders, a 21-year-old music and business third year student originally from Reading, was working in the student shop just behind the cash point when the armed gang attacked.
