HUNDREDS of protesters are expected to gather outside Knowsley Council's headquarters today to protest against tax rises.
The rally, organised by Unite the union and community groups, will be held ahead of the council's budget meeting this evening, where plans to cut more than 300 council jobs and raise council tax contributions for people on benefits will be rubberstamped.
John Fleming, head of the Kirkby Residents' Action Group, said: "People are unhappy with the cuts and the underhand way they are being brought in.
"The council is asking unemployed residents and people on benefits to make a contribution to their council tax, where they have previously paid nothing.
"People are only just getting letters about this now and it's going to come as a shock to them."
The budget meeting will be held at the Municipal Buildings in Huyton at 6pm and protesters will stage their rally an hour before.
