Merseyside sees rise in jobless figures

UNEMPLOYMENT in Liverpool city region has risen again as the economy remains in the doldrums.

Figures released this morning by the Office for National Statistics showed the total number of people claiming jobseeker’s allowance across  the six boroughs in February stood at 53,746 – up 1% from 53,178 in January.

The biggest rise was in Wirral, where the total rose 2.75% to 8,520.

In Liverpool, the figure rose 1.3% from 20,350 to 20,622, and in St Helens it rose 1.2% to 5,746.

The claimant count rose just 0.45% in Knowsley and fell slightly in Halton and Sefton.
