DOZENS of schools are closed across Merseyside and more are expected to shut during the day as the cold weather tightens its grip.
The region woke up to a blanket of snow this morning and heavy snowfall has been forecast to continue all day and into the early hours of tomorrow.
Council bosses have announced several schools closures in Liverpool, including Kirkdale St Lawrence, Garston CE Primary, Sandfield Park School, Hunts Cross Primary School, Much Woolton RC Primary School, St Nicholas Primary School, Millstead Special School, Norman Pannell Primary School and Corinthian Primary School.
Childwall Academy is closed except to those taking exams, while SFX College, Childwall College and Cardinal Heenan are among the others shut down.
In Wirral, St Mary's College, Wallasey and South Wirral High School, Pensby High School and Neston High School are all closed, along with dozens of primary schools, Wirral Grammar School for Boys, Wirral Grammar School for Girls
Brackenwood Juniors, Bebington, Wirral Grammar School for Girls and Wirral Grammar for Boys are also shut.
In Sefton, Birkdale High, Newfield, Presfield and St Michael's High were among 15 schools closed this morning. Melling Primary School is closed, along with Holy Family Primary School and St Mary’s Primary, both in Crosby.
Knowsley Park Centre for Learning, Alt Bridge, Roby Park, Bluebell Park, St Michael and All Angels in Kirkby, Northwood Primary, Park Brow and St Marie's Catholic Primary were shut in Knowsley. Knowsley Safari Park has also closed.
Motorists were advised to take care on the roads throughout the day, and electrical problems caused delays on Merseyrail services running through Birkenhead North.
The Isle of Man steam packet from Liverpool to Douglas was cancelled, while there was a one-hour delay to the Stena Line Liverpool-Belfast sailing.
