Rhys Jones: Police make 17th arrest

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the murder of Rhys Jones.

Police said the arrest was made this morning, twelve days after the 11-year-old was shot in the neck in Croxteth Park on Wednesday, August 22.

It brings to 17 the total number of people arrested during the inquiry, so far 11 of those have been bailed and five are being treated as witnesses.

Officers also today praised a “brave” witness who they had been appealing for to get in touch again, after he rang back to speak to police.

The witness, who initially called the confidential Crimestoppers line at 11.20pm on Saturday August 25, gave information about a man seen on a mobile phone. Officers are now appealing for him to get in touch a third time.

Detectives are also continuing to appeal for the driver of a red car to come forward and help with their inquiries.

The motorist would have been on Fir Tree Drive North about 7.40pm on August 22, and may have seen a cyclist riding towards Dam Wood.

Senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Dave Kelly said: “People are aware that we have described one individual firing a gun but, as with any offence, there are various stages and elements to it, including where the gun came from and what happened afterwards.

“When we have grounds to suspect people involved in any stage, they will be arrested in connection with this offence.

“We have a very clear strategy for this investigation, and we’re determined to leave no stone unturned.

“We’re confident about the swift progress we’re making, and want to thank the public for their ongoing support.”
