A teenage witness in the Rhys Jones murder trial today said the alleged killer was surprised a special witness “hadn’t handed him in” in the weeks following the killing.
The special witness has already appeared at Liverpool Crown Court to give evidence against Sean Mercer, 18, who denies murder.
The witness agreed to give police details of activity in the weeks after the 11-year-old’s death in exchange for immunity from prosecution.
Today, another witness who knew Mercer and the special witness said Mercer questioned him between the end of September and start of November last year to see if the special witness had spoken to the police.
The witness - who cannot be named - said he and Mercer met outside a local school in Croxteth, Liverpool, where the conversation took place.
He said of Mercer: “He spoke to me in an all right tone, a matey way.
“He shouted and signalled me to go towards him.
“He shouted me by name.
“I went over and he asked me how the witness was.
