HOME Secretary Jacqui Smith last night said she was “pleased” that the verdict brought those responsible for the “senseless” murder of Rhys Jones to justice.
“This was a tragic case which shocked the nation and I hope this verdict brings some peace to Rhys’ parents, family and friends at this difficult time.
“I would like to congratulate Merseyside Police for their efforts investigating this case, working with the local community and supporting witnesses to come forward and identify Rhys’ killer.”
Conservative leader David Cameron praised the bravery of Rhys’s parents.
He said: “The senseless killing of Rhys Jones was a crime that horrified the nation.
“Today, with the conviction of Sean Mercer and other gang members, justice at least has been done.
“But for Rhys’ parents, Stephen and Melanie, the hurt will never end.”
The Bishop of Liverpool, the Right Rev James Jones, said: “Our prayers are with Rhys’s family that after reliving the nightmare they will find peace through this just verdict.”
Liverpool council leader Warren Bradley said: “The murder of Rhys Jones shocked and appalled the whole of the city, the nation and the wider world.
“It is a relief for everyone to know that those involved in this heinous crime have been found guilty and will be out of circulation for a very long time.”
