MORE than three million people lined the streets to watch the colourful pageantry of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.

The annual event brought some much-needed relief to a city still struggling in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

With 16 giant balloons, 28 floats, 11 marching bands and nearly 2,500 dancers and clowns, the parade, which is now in its 93rd year, was watched on TV by 50 million people.

Volunteers served thousands of turkey dinners to those left homeless by the storm and 5,000 families were given front-row tickets and free transport to the huge event.

New York is not the only city to play host to such an event for Thanksgiving.  Philadelphia, Chicago and Detroit stage their own holiday parades.
