A man accused of killing his six children in a house fire has collapsed and sobbed in the witness box as a court heard a 999 call made by him and his wife as the blaze took hold. Sitting in the court as he gave evidence, Mick Philpott, 56, doubled over and wept loudly as Nottingham Crown Court heard the desperate call made to emergency services as the children were trapped inside the house.

An SAS sniper today won an appeal against convictions for illegally possessing a pistol and ammunition. Danny Nightingale, 38, of Crewe, Cheshire, was sentenced to 18 months military detention by a judge sitting in a military court in November 2012 after admitting illegally possessing a Glock 9mm pistol and more than 300 rounds of ammunition.

DJ Dave Lee Travis has been re-arrested over further allegations of sexual offences. The 67-year-old was originally arrested by Operation Yewtree detectives investigating the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal in November. He answered bail on Monday and was re-arrested in connection with further allegations made to officers working on Operation Yewtree.

Supermarket giant Tesco has bought restaurant chain Giraffe for £48.6 million under plans to transform its stores into family-friendly retail destinations. The group plans to open Giraffe restaurants alongside larger stores, with the first due near London before the end of the year, as part of aims for customers to "meet, eat and drink, as well as shop" when they visit its supermarkets.
