A Chinese buffet restaurant in New York has been fined after staff were caught stamping on garlic that was then used to cook food.

A customer leaving the restaurant saw the worker stamping on the bulbs in a back alley, and reported them to Rockland County health department.

Senior public health sanitarian John Stoughton said: "The health department does not consider a person's shoe or boot a proper instrument to use in food preparation."
