A pensioner drove the wrong way down the M6 motorway, causing drivers to swerve out of the way, Cumbria Police said.
Drivers on the motorway near Shap Summit began phoning police as a silver Peugeot was going northbound in the outside lane of the southbound carriageway, causing another car to crash. The driver was treated for whiplash.
The Peugeot was finally stopped by police near to Shap Beck, and the 82-year-old woman driver was interviewed by police.
The Crown Prosecution Service will decide if she should be charged.
