Historic stairway

A section of Eiffel Tower’s staircase built in 1889 goes on sale at the Hotel Drouot auction house in Paris on Monday.

The 14-foot section once helped link the monument’s second and third levels, and is expected to sell for between £15,000 and £22,000, according to the auctioneers.

In 1983, the staircase was removed to make room for new lifts and was cut into 24 pieces that were auctioned off to museums and collectors around the world.
