Sew popular

Consumers are turning their backs on disposable high street fashion in favour of home tailoring, catalogue store Argos has said.

The high street chain has reported a boom in the popularity of sewing machines, with sales of selected Brother and Singer models growing by 50% between 2006 and 2007.

Argos ascribed the boom to an increased awareness of social and environmental issues and the desire to stand out from the crowd, driving shoppers to make and customise their own clothes.
