Prince to pay up

The Prince of Wales will pay off an old family debt from more than 350 years ago on a visit to Worcester.

The debt was incurred by Charles’s ancestor, King Charles II, in 1651 who, prior to the Battle of Worcester, commissioned the Clothiers Company to make uniforms for troops, promising to pay after winning the battle.

But Cromwell won, and the King fled to Europe, leaving an outstanding payment of £453.3s. Charles will personally repay the outstanding sum to The Commandery - the Royalist headquarters in the Civil War.
