Experts from a leading British bird sanctuary are travelling to Madagascar hoping their skills can save the world’s rarest duck, it emerged.
Staff from Slimbridge Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) in Gloucestershire are heading for the island in a bid to restore the critically-endangered Madagascar pochard.
The pochard was thought to be extinct until a couple of years ago when 24 birds were discovered on a small lake in a remote area of the African country. The UK team will meet local experts to look at establishing a breeding programme.
