Stolen antique £5,000 violin reunited with owner after being seen for sale for £10 in second-hand shop

A musician has been reunited with her stolen antique £5,000 violin after it was spotted on sale for £10 in a second-hand shop.

The 1898 Stradivarius copy was taken while Heather Cowan was performing at the Theatre Royal in Bath on June 6.

The musician left the instrument at the side of the stage. The violin was then spotted by a shop assistant, who had seen an appeal in the local paper, in the window of a second-hand shop in Bath.

The shop had bought the instrument for £10 without knowing it was stolen. Royan Smith, 43, of Great Stanhope Street, was sentenced to 12 weeks in jail after admitting stealing the violin.
