A hoard of more than 10,000 Roman coins has been unearthed by an amateur metal detector enthusiast making his first discovery, it emerged.
The bronze and silver coins, thought to date from between 320AD and 340AD - the late period of Constantine I and the House of Constantine - were found in a farmer’s field near Shrewsbury, Shropshire, and are thought to be one of the largest coin hauls ever made in the county.
Finder Nic Davies made the discovery when using his recently purchased metal detector for the first time. Shropshire Council Museum Service hope to display the hoard in a museum to be built in Shrewsbury.
