LIONEL MESSI is quite simply the best player I have ever seen – and it is utterly ridiculous he has now broken the record for most goals scored in a calendar year.
Gerd Muller’s previous best of 85 goals for club and country, set in 1972, was the kind of landmark you think would never be broken in the modern era.
Yet Messi has smashed it with weeks to spare. It is sensational.
Messi never seems to miss-hit a shot. He never bumps one in off his knee. He scores headers, free-kicks, and can chip the keeper from three yards.
He never gets injured. He seems like he is made of rubber. Clip him and he gets back up. He’s not known as a diver. And by all accounts, he’s a nice guy away from the field. Never in trouble.
Well done to Carles Rexach – when he was at Barcelona, he got Messi’s dad to sign a napkin when the player was still at school stating the club would take him on and build him up and help him become a great player.
What an inspired bit of napkin signing that was.
