WHO is on the panel that decides whether somebody can become a top-level referee?
That’s assuming there is a panel. Are there ex-players or managers on there? You’d like to think there would be.
You need to have people on there who have been involved in the game previously. Former referees must be on there, of course, but you need a balance.
The reason I am discussing this is that Premier League referees aren’t helping themselves this season – most notably Anthony Taylor at Upton Park last weekend, who got it wrong with all three big decisions.
Everton’s early disallowed goal shouldn’t have been chalked off, and there’s no way the two red cards were anything like worthy of a dismissal. Old pros such as myself bang on about things like this, but clearly the referee doesn’t understand the game.
You know it’s bad when Sam Allardyce and David Moyes are left looking at each other on the touchline.
They are old school. Many of us are. And many still in the game are.
