Mark Lawrenson: FA Cup shocks prove my point about Premier League defending

PEOPLE suggest the magic of the cup competitions is still alive given the shocks that have occurred in the FA Cup and League Cup this season.

But for me, it underlines what I’ve been saying for some time.

Premier League defending isn’t very good.

At all.

Week in, week out, the number of goals that are being scored in the top flight suggests it actually isn’t that difficult to score against a Premier League team. The lower leagues have also been helped by the rotation policy at several clubs.

Look at Liverpool. The team that started against Oldham had never played as an XI before, and once you go a goal down and are up against it a bit, it makes a difference.

That shouldn’t be an excuse, though. Even if you are struggling like Norwich, you should be beating a non-League team at home.
