Davies tracking trio to strengthen City spine

CHESTER CITY manger Simon Davies will continue to formulate his plans for next season this week as he tracks several targets.

Davies has agreed deals with all the out-of-contract players from last season’s City squad that he wanted to retain, and now his efforts will be devoted to filling the gaps in the squad that he has identified.

“I have spoken to a number of players and managers, and there are quite a few irons in the fire, but at this stage I would rather not divulge who they are publicly,” he added.

“Some of the positions we are looking to fill are fairly obvious, we need a central defender and a central midfield player, and of course we are awaiting on a decision from Vauxhall Motors about our offer for Paul Taylor.

“But if that doesn’t happen we have identified other strikers who would fill the bill,” said Davies.

It is understood that if Chester don’t receive a positive response from Vauxhall Motors to their £30,000 bid in the next day or so, they will turn their attentions to another striker identified by Davies.

In another development the City manager last night officially named central defender Paul Linwood as team captain for next season.

The 24-year-old pledged his immediate future to Chester last week when he signed a new and improved two-year contract with the club.

Davies said: “It was an obvious choice, Paul was immense last season, and he is a fantastic role model for the younger players in the squad. The example he sets and the level of performance he turns in week after week is outstanding.”
