Griffiths joins Chester City as assistant manager

CHESTER CITY manager Simon Davies last night appointed Hugh Griffiths as his assistant manager, and promoted reserve team coach Billy Gerrard to a similar position with the first team.

Griffiths comes to the Deva Stadium with an impressive CV. The former Welsh schoolboy international holds ‘A’ Licence coaching qualifications, and this summer he will be sitting his Pro- Licence examinations.

Until recently he was assistant to Peter Davenport at Southport, leaving just before the end of the season.

Davies was naturally pleased to have captured the signature of the 32-year-old: He said: “Hugh has an impressive coaching pedigree. Not only does he hold virtually all the available coaching qualifications, but he also has a Sports Science degree and has some progressive coaching ideas.

“Hugh will fit in well to what we are trying to create at the Deva Stadium, and he could well prove to be one of our best signings of the summer.”

City aren’t allowing their first team squad to become sedentary over the summer. From June 10 the players will report twice a week to undergo some gymnasium work, then pre-season training starts in earnest on July 1.

Vauxhall Motors yesterday turned down City’s £30,000 offer for striker Paul Taylor. Chester will now decide their next move, and an announcement is expected in the next 24 hours.
