THE Deva Stadium was a hive of activity yesterday, as discussions with potential playing targets and their agents continued.
Chester City manager Simon Davies has made no secret of the positions he is looking to fill, with a goalkeeper, a central defender, a couple of midfield players, and a striker topping his list.
The representatives of former Tranmere Rovers midfielder Mike Jones, and a midfielder, who was with a Premier League club last season, were two of the conversations held yesterday, while an experienced central defender is also in discussions with City’s management.
Jones, 20, released by Tranmere earlier this month, made nine first team appearances for the Prenton Park club last season, and has also had Coca-Cola League Two experience while on loan with Shrewsbury Town. The Birkenhead-born player is a graduate of Rovers youth academy, and can play in the centre of midfield, or on the right wing.
City’s chief executive Bob Gray confirmed that talks had been held with a number of potential targets. “Simon (Davies) has drawn up a wish list of players, and we are having talks with as many as possible, this is an extremely busy time at most football clubs, and we are close to agreeing terms with certain of our targets.”
Meanwhile, Gray confirmed that sales of season tickets for next season were progressing well.
“Sales have been extremely brisk, and with the first of our special pricing offers closing on May 31, a lot of people are taking advantage of the deals on offer.”
The 2008/09 season starts on Saturday August 9.
City are hopeful of opening their new city centre store in two weeks.
