Chester sack Griffiths after dressing room ‘incident’

CHESTER City last night dismissed their assistant manager Hugh Griffiths for what was described by a spokesman for the club as “unacceptable actions”.

Wrexham-based Griffiths, who held a similar position with Southport last season, joined Chester earlier this summer following an interview with manager Simon Davies.

Speaking to the Daily Post last night City owner Stephen Vaughan said: “We were left with no alternative but to dismiss Mr Griffiths, following an incident that happened during the half-time period in our match against Leeds United on Tuesday. It is not prudent to go into too much detail about the matter at this time but the incident was unsavoury and involved Mr Griffiths and one of our playing squad and that is all I am prepared to say at the moment.”

It is understood that Chester won’t consider a replacement for Griffiths until next week at the earliest.

City are next in action tomorrow when they face Wycombe Wanderers in a Coca-Cola League Two match at the Deva Stadium.

Chester have had a wretched start to the new campaign losing their opening two games heavily, going down 6-0 at Dagenham and Redbridge in their League opener last Saturday, then losing 5-2 in the Carling Cup first round tie against Leeds in midweek.

Davies is hopeful that influential skipper Paul Linwood will be fit for tomorrow’s game after feeling stiffness in his back after the Carling Cup tie.

Meanwhile, former City striker Chris Holroyd, who left the club last month, has joined Blue Square Premier outfit Cambridge United.

The Abbey Stadium club, who are managed by ex-City defender Gary Brabin, have agreed a contract until June 2009 with the player.

Former Chester manager Bobby Williamson, who earlier this month was linked with the vacant managerial position with the Uganda national side, won’t be moving to Africa.

Ugandan Football Association President, Lawrence Mulindwa said: “We have not spoken to Williamson at any level. We have interviewed two coaches but Williamson is not one of them.”
