Walters deal may assist Chester coffers

IPSWICH TOWN striker Jon Walters handed a transfer request in last night and if a move does materialise it could mean a financial windfall for Chester City.

The 24-year-old Birkenhead-born player joined the Suffolk club in January last year for a six figure transfer fee, with part of the deal stipulating that City would receive 20% of any future transfer fee.

Walters, who joined Chester on a free transfer from Wrexham, was the subject of reported interest from Premier League newcomers Stoke City during the summer. However, a move wasn’t forthcoming.

It is understood that West Bromwich Albion has joined Stoke in monitoring Walters’ situation and sources in the Midlands indicated last night a move may be forthcoming prior to next Monday’s closure of the transfer window.

Walters is valued in the region of £3m and if a move is brokered it could mean a windfall of around £500,000 for Chester. Meanwhile, Chester, who still haven’t registered a win this campaign, are next in action on Saturday against fellow strugglers Barnet at the Deva Stadium.

Manager Simon Davies is still hopeful of bolstering his squad prior to the weekend clash against the Londoners, by acquiring a striker and a central defender.
