Wright hoping Chester’s luck changes at County

CHESTER City manager Mark Wright is hoping his team’s luck changes when they face Notts County at Meadow Lane on Saturday.

City have dominated their last trio of matches but only ended up drawing the games and as such they are still searching for their first victory since Boxing Day, when they defeated Accrington Stanley at the Deva Stadium.

The 19-game winless run has seen Chester slip into the relegation zone and they now have only six matches left in which to preserve their Football League status.

He said: “Drawn games aren’t quite good enough for what we really want and that is disappointing for the players because they are giving everything they’ve got.

“We looked attack-minded by playing three up front on Saturday. I thought we did a lot of good things but we haven’t quite got the results in recent weeks that we have deserved.

“I don’t think I could have asked for more of the players. They are showing plenty of fighting qualities and endeavour and they are creating a number of goal-scoring chances.”

One player who has emerged with tremendous credit in recent matches has been young defender Glenn Rule and Wright has acknowledged the progress shown by the former YTS trainee.

He said: “If I had to single anyone out, it would have to be young Glenn Rule. For a 19-year-old to be involved in a dogfight and to keep his form as consistently as he is, is excellent.

“You didn’t see any thrills and spills. He goes and heads it, he clears, he talks, his reading of the game is very good. I think he’s doing exceptionally well.”

The former Liverpool and England defender is convinced his squad will be showing the character required to garner the type of results they need from the final half dozen matches.

He added: “We’ve got to keep battling and progressing and learn from the sort of performance we gave against Bradford on Saturday.

“We’ve now got six games left and we’ve got to see if we can win all six.”
