CHESTER CITY’S new director of football Morrell Maison last night gave his first media interview since Boxing Day and indicated that he had introduced a trio of potential investors who were showing interest in purchasing the troubled Deva Stadium outfit.
City, who appear to be in a parlous financial state, with players’ wages and other monies outstanding, have lurched from crisis to crisis over the past 18 months, and Maison has been brought to the club to make recommend-ations about possible investment or a takeover.
Asked about the progress he was making in his quest for financial injections the former Kettering and Halesowen manager said: “We have a group of solicitors and accountants at the club as I talk, they are undertaking a form of due diligence.
“They are representing a local group of businessmen, and are looking at getting involved with the club. There are three groups of investors I am introducing to the club.”
Questioned about the nature of that investment, Maison was asked if the investment was an injection of capital or a takeover from the Vaughan family, the director of football said: “It would be a takeover.”
Last Sunday City’s manager Jim Harvey parted company from the club after being told he didn’t figure in the new consortiums plans. When asked about this controversial decision, Maison said: “I am not so sure about that one. It wasn’t my decision. You would have to speak to the Vaughan family to get an answer to that question.”
Maison is expected to meet the Chester City playing squad today to outline his plans for the future.
One of the club’s supporters groups The Chester City Exiles have issued a media statement outlining their concerns for the future of the Football Conference outfit. Chairman Pauline Meakins said: “We keep being told that the FA, the Conference and other footballing authorities are aware of the problems, but what are they doing to stop the destruction of our club?
“The supporters feel very helpless, and we are incredulous that the football authorities can let this happen to the club when they have banned Stephen Vaughan Snr from running the club, yet Mr Maison has publicly mentioned that he was appointed by Stephen Vaughan. How does this sit with their fit and proper ruling?”
Meanwhile, midfielder Anthony Barry who had his contract terminated by mutual agreement on Monday, trained with Wrexham yesterday and is expected to put pen to paper, subject to a medical, later today.
