City on brink of expulsion despite seven-day reprieve

CHESTER City could well have played their last match in the Blue Square Premier following a meeting of the Football Conference management committee in London last night.

It is understood that the Conference weren’t convinced that City’s current ownership could meet their outstanding financial responsibilities, nor were they won over by what is believed to have been an unprofessional presentation as to how the club would resolve the five charges that had been levied against them.

The Conference threatened to kick Chester out of the league earlier this year after a series of unacceptable off the field problems, but despite assurances from the clubs owner Stephen Vaughan Junior who headed the City delegation, advisor Gary Metcalf and managing director Bob Gray, it appears that the problems are no nearer to being resolved.

City were told they have a further week to ensure that all their football creditors and HM Revenue and Customs debts are cleared, however it is unclear how the owners will find the monies to clear their financial commitments.

Chesters players haven’t been paid for over three months.

If Chester City are expelled from the Conference, which is now a virtual certainty, they will almost certainly be liquidated.

Citys scheduled match against Histon tomorrow has been postponed, which means the recent match against Ebbsfleet United could well prove to have been Chester’s swansong.

The Conference are expected to issue an official statement about the situation later today.

Meanwhile, Chesters largest supporters group City Fans United held a meeting with concerned followers of the club in the Guild Hall last night to discuss the current situation and propose the formation of a phoenix club.
