SPORTS stars are usually culpable when they lose tens of thousands of pounds.
High stakes bets that go wrong, heavy fines for misconduct, and money spent on extravagant living are the usual culprits.
But rarely do they suffer the misfortune of having prize money snatched away from them for no fault of their own.
Ronnie O’Sullivan’s 147 break at the Crucible should have netted the mercurial player £157,000. He had plans to splash out on a Bentley convertible, which came to a crashing halt when Ali Carter’s 147 made the 2008 World Championships the first ranking tournament to see two maximum breaks.
This means Carter claims half of the prize money and probably force O’Sullivan to park, for now at least, his dream of buying a Bentley.
