CHELSEA JARVIS set a new Young Athletes League record for the under 13 800m when she recorded 2.19.9 with a solo run at Connahs Quay, removing current international Jenny Meadows’ name from the record books by just under a second.
Jarvis also won the long jump in conjunction with team mate Chloe Rigby as Saints battled into second position by defeating Trafford and Deeside. In the high jump Sophie Rigby set a personal best 1.51 ahead of this weekend’s county championships.
Samantha Fraser rewrote the club’s record book by clearing 1.65 in the Northern League match at Wigan, clubmate Josie Barrow clearing 2.20 in the pole vault for another club best. Sue Lowrie and Sue Clague were pressed into action as Saints grabbed fourth spot just one half point behind Holmfirth.
SouthportWaterloo were only a half point adrift in the Northern League match. Stephen Marshall and Nathan Ouko provided a sprint double, Lauren Brennan won both sprints, Katie McHale took the high hurdles and Stephanie May the B 400m event.
For LPS Mike Zain and Danny Higham won the sprints, Jack McGinn recorded 48.9 in the 400m Kirsty Longely won the 3,000m and 1,500m while Rachel Hutchinson set a club pole vault record of 2.30.
Dave McKay was West Cheshire’s star throwing the javelin in excess of 65 metres and winning the shot and discus for good measure.
Becky McLinden (100m) and Alan Woods (steeplechase) were rare winners for Wirral at Sports City in Manchester as the Bebington outfit, suffering from the impact of the Bank Holiday and the late finish to the football season, finished sixth, two places behind Liverpool from whom Shawn James, Mike Goulding and
Philip Ellershaw won the sprints. In division four Warrington also had a close battle defeating Altrincham by a single point with Manchester two points adrift in third place. Luke Miller-Briggs won both sprints while juniors Stephen Broadhurst, Matthew Jackson and Danny Cliife dominated the middle distances.
Liverpool Harriers lead the Premier division of the Young Athletes League following an defeat of Leeds at Blackburn. The match marked the return of Katarina Thompson who won the shot putt and long jump. Newly-promoted West Cheshire were fourth.
LPS won their home match at Wavertree by 27 points, Abbey McComb winning the high jump, Tonia Swift the 3,000m while Emma Givens and Grace Stewart produced a hurdles double. Southport Waterloo completed a superb two days’ competition finishing second to Gateshead at Blackpool.
For the Sandgrounders James Armstrong won both sprints, Lauren Brennan and Emma Lyons scoring maximum points in the 300m. For the Bebington outfit Andrew Gawne, Rory Lott, Shaun Egan and John Philip Seymour won the middle distance races but it was insufficient to keep Wirral any higher than fourth.
This weekend sees the Merseyside County Championships at Wavertree on Saturday, the Cheshire Championships over two days at Ellesmere Port and the Lancashire Championships over two days at Blackpool. Anyone attending the latter event should be aware that the stand is closed due to vandalism and they should bring their own seating.
The Liverpool Women’s 10k at Sefton Park on Sunday, while other events include the South Cheshire 20 at Shavington near Crewe and the Golden Ball 5k at Lancaster.
