Junior Football: Colts are on cloud nine after their clean sweep

VICTORIA COLTS girls team are on cloud nine.

The under-10s team, who compete in the Wallasey Junior Football League, are celebrating an unprecedented level of success having won nine trophies in just one season.

What makes the feat all the more remarkable is that the girls have been assembled for just one season while their winning ways have seen them beat many established teams, of which many players are several years their senior.

The Colts, under the guidance of managers Chris Price and Garry Woodhouse began their memorable campaign in October 2006 with victory in the Wallasey Soccerdome Girls U10 tournament before repeating the feat later that month with success in the Footie Chick U10s regional tournament.

Their greatest achievement thus far arrived in the shape of an early Christmas present when beating Manchester City’s girls in the Curzon Ashton Girls U10s tournament in December.

They began the new year in style by reaching the final of the Wallasey Soccerdome Girls U12 tournament.

Coach Sam Price said: “We were up against older girls and just wanted to see how good our side was. We were pleasantly surprised when we ended up winning the whole thing – we were delighted.”

The final two months of the season culminated in the Colts’ most frantic fixture congestion as May saw the girls win the Girls Wallasey Junior Football League with an outstanding unbeaten run of 27 wins from their 27 games, scoring 184 goals along the way and conceding just 12.

The girls followed up their league win by beating their Everton counterparts in the Footie Chick Girls National U10 heats.

The following month saw them wrap up the season in style with the addition of a further three trophies; the Egerton Classic U10s tournament, the national Footie Chick U10 girls finals, where again they beat Everton in the final and the U10s Ellesmere Port Girls tournament.

Sam added: “It’s been a long, but very enjoyable season and we’re so proud of what the girls have achieved. They have only played together for such a short time but they have proved a brilliant bunch and we now hope they can continue their success next season when they step up a level.

“We are also looking for sponsors and more quality players in current school years five and six for season 2007-2008.”

Opponents admit Rovers unlucky not to triumph

THEY share a reputation for telling it straight as managers so perhaps it is not surprising that Darren Ferguson does not disguise his professional regard for Ronnie Moore. Read
