WEST KIRBY Sailing Club enjoyed a successful Regatta at Beaumaris during the Menai Strait Fortnight yesterday despite some problems not of their making.
The breeze was very changeable and did a ‘U’ before settling from the north and it meant the yachts were sometimes bunched together.
Gerald Riley made the most of the conditions in the West Kirby Hilbres to sail Highlight into first place and claim the Hilarity Poignard but it was close with Howard Reynolds-Jones in Hiawatha less then a boat length down.
David Mayhew in Jupiter led the Stars to take the Vase while the Falcon fleet was headed by John Burthem in Hawk who was rewarded with the Jack Orrell Cup.
One of the Offshore fleet Jenevieve ran aground on a spit near the line and could not be refloated until the flood tide set in but the other competitors were more fortunate and completed the distance. The result on corrected times has been delayed 24 hours due to a rating problem.
Howard Mattocks in Siglen completed a hat-trick in the Fifes and it was a similar picture for the Squib Cybi (Richard Roberts) and the Conway One Design Seriol (Alan Davies).
