Snooker: Duo in Sheffield

SNOOKER: Liverpool potters Andrew Higginson and Rod Lawler are looking to start the new snooker season with a bang today.

Last season’s Welsh Open runner-up Higginson and veteran Lawler will both be in action at this year’s SAGA Insurance Masters qualifying, which runs at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield from today until next Wednesday.

Provisional world No 32 Higginson locks horns with Hertfordshire cueman Joe Jogia in the first round.

Meanwhile, Lawler, 36, the 1996 International Open runner-up, meets Essex cueman Jimmy Robertson in his opener.

“It would be a big achievement for me if I could qualify for the Masters,” said Higginson.

“It’s such a famous event, it would be great to play at Wembley Arena,” he added.
