Cycling: Roberts reigns at Rainford

CHRISTINE Roberts (North Shropshire Wheelers) was first in the Merseyside Ladies CA 10-mile time trial at Rainford.

She receives the Molly Soens Memorial Trophy for recording 25 minutes 10 seconds in windy conditions. Roberts was also second on handicap (25.10 on scratch). Kirkby CC’s Linda Tully was second overall with an actual 27.47 and was first on handicap (24.37). Clare Gauller (Birkenhead North End CC) was both third overall with 28.42 and on handicap (26.12).

In the Juvenile section Kristian Ramsden (ABC Centreville, 25.48) just pipped Liverpool Century RC’s Michael Gregg (25.49). David Hitchen (New Brighton CC) won the men’s section with 22.01, Southport CC’s Dave Hilton was second with 22.23 and won the vets over 40 prize.

Stephen Ludden (St Helens CRC) was third overall in 22.26. Southport also had the fastest vet over 50 in Bill Sedgwick (24.02) and Bill Lloyd (24.39) took the vets over 60 prize. Lancashire RC’s Gordon Holt was the fastest veteran over 70 with 26.16.

Britain’s Mark Cavendish seized the yellow jersey at the Tour of Britain with a surging prologue victory around Crystal Palace. He becomes the first British rider to hold the leader’s jersey since the race began in 2004.
