Tennis: Tranmere tennis player to represent Team Great Britain Special Olympics

TRANMERE tennis player Peter Millar flew out to Shanghai, China yesterday, where he will represent Team Great Britain at the Special Olympics World Summer Games.

The premier international event for athletes with learning disabilities takes place from October 2-11.

Peter, 15, has been playing tennis since he was four, but found his early progress in the sport limited by having learning disabilities.

But he has found great success over the last four years after discovering learning disability tennis training weekends and competitions organised by the Tennis Foundation in conjunction with Special Olympics Great Britain.

Last month Peter won his third successive men’s singles gold medal in the fourth Annual National Learning Disability Tennis event in Nottingham, while pairing up with Leicestershire’s Tom Styles to also win a men’s doubles gold medal. Peter and Tom will pair up again in Shanghai and Peter will again hope to come home with another brace of medals.

Peter is a member of Wallasey Manor Tennis Club, where his coached by Leigh Owen, and is a former Junior Player of the Year.

One of six Team GB tennis players that will be competing in Shanghai, Peter has also been greatly helped in his training and preparations over the last year by Wirral Tennis Centre at Bidston, who have supported him with court time.
