Cycling: Champion dies

CYCLING: Champion time triallist from Anfield, Ben W. Bentley has died aged 97.

Crowned Walton C & AC Club Champion in 1933, he broke the course/event record in the LTTCA 12-hour event with just over 230 miles, beating his record the following year which stood until 1948 when it was again beaten by Bentley himself.

He went on to win the club championship another four times. He was a prime candidate for the Olympic pursuit team of 1936 but missed out through injury. During his later years he won numerous Merseyside Vets age related awards and was their champion before retiring in 1970.
