Cycling: Cummings wins

CYCLING: Wirral’s Olympian Steve Cummings, now riding for Italian team Barloworld has won his first professional road race in the Giro di Calabria.

Using his track pursuiting skills the 25-year-old from Prenton who is the only rider ever to have won the Eddie Soens Memorial Cycle Race as a junior (1999), rode a tactically perfect race.

He wore the race leader’s blue jersey for a day and finished second overall at six seconds.

He said, “It was fantastic to finally win a pro race.”
